About the Poipu Beach Area
Shopping, Sightseeing & Dining All Within Walking Distance from Hale a Kai…
Activities & Tours in the Poipu Kauai Area…
The south shore of Kauai, Poipu and Koloa areas abound with activities that will appeal to the “do-er” in you. Snorkeling and scuba, surfing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, horseback riding, fishing, and whale watching (in season) just to name a few. Many of these activities are within walking distance from Hale a Kai. Kukui’ula harbor is often the launch and/or landing point for many of these sea-going activities. Some of Kauai’s most sought after surf breaks including PK’s (Prince Kuhio’s), Centers, Acid Drop and Heroins are located in Poipu.
Botanical Garden Tours
One of Kauai’s jewels is the proverbial stones throw from Hale a Kai and is a sure bet to put one in touch with Kauai’s special ‘aina’ (spirit of the land). Allerton Gardens is one of the premier botanical gardens in the world and is worth taking one of their amazing guided tours to experience the beauty and splendor of the flora of Kauai and the fascinating story of how the gardens came-to-be. Daily motorized tours are available and if one becomes a member one can get in on those ‘special’ tours that will make your stay on Kauai a once in a lifetime experience.
Shopping & Dining
An easy 5 minute stroll down the street brings you to one of Kauai’s premier restaurants, The Beach House Restaurant which opens to the marvelous panorama of the south shore and boasts one of the best menus in the area. When the “urge to shop” arises, Hale a Kai couldn’t put you in a better position. If you need that perfect “aloha gift” for friends and family that are sitting enviously at home, it’s just a short 5 minute drive (or an easy, scenic, 20 minute walk) to the perennial favorite; Spouting Horn. Shell leis, jewelry and island–style crafts abound to help you find just the right gift to send some smiles back home. The Spouting Horn is also the site of one of the most photographed spots on the island where the surf meets a volcanic ‘blow hole’ that sends up an impressive ocean plume. Art Galleries, jewelry shops and clothing stores are just a short walk from Hale a Kai at the newly opened Kukui’ula Village featuring eateries to appeal to just about any taste from local favorites like Bubba Burgers , Kauai’s own Lappert’s ice Cream parlor, Living Foods Deli & Grocery Store, and Merriman’s.
Greater Poipu Area
A short 5 minute drive on Koloa Road in the Poipu Shopping Village one will find other south shore dining classics like Keoki’s , Roy’s, and everybody’s lunch favorite, Puka Dogs. Poipu Shopping Village also houses the ‘big names’ like Crazy Shirts, Overboard Clothing and Sand People, as well as other unique boutiques and gift shops found only on Kauai. On the ocean side (Makai) is another long standing dining favorite; Brennecke’s Beach Broiler serving lunch and dinner. Just across the street from Brennecke’s is Poipu Beach Park, the perfect place for a family outing with covered pavilions, white sand beaches for the active ‘tanner’, great snorkeling and even a shallow protected swimming area for the kids (keiki). Its common to see the Federally protected Hawaiian Monk Seals napping in this area.
Old Koloa Town
One must not forget historic Old Koloa town just minutes east on Poipu Road. Old Koloa town’s main street is home to one of the islands’ family owned and oldest grocery stores, Sueoka’s. It’s the place to go if you need those special ingredients for your meal, Hawaiian, Asian or “Haole”. At the other end of town is another Grocer, Big Save Market. Need a run to the deli? The Koloa Fish Market is one of the best in the area, their pupu platters and lunch specials are simply “Ono”! There is more shopping to be had in Old Koloa Town including Surf Shops, T shirt shops, gift emporiums, and art galleries. Activity desks for booking tours and gear outfitters (snorkel, scuba, bicycles, scooters, surf gear, kayaks and more) can be found in Poipu as well as Old Koloa Town.
Weekly Local Farmer’s Market
